Open Source Bake-offs, and Trade-offs

NetworkWorld’s Barry Nance just posted his bakeoff of open source management tools. This test focused on the open source products available from 3 vendors, Hyperic, Zenoss and Groundwork. The test was based on functionality alone, and did not consider other specialized topics such as scalability, setup or any special management of specific technologies. In Barry’s words:

We tested each product’s ability to discover, manage, administer, monitor, report on, diagnose, troubleshoot, reset, reconfigure and secure our network devices, applications, servers and clients.

Mysterious “Computer Glitches” strike again

This week there are a couple scary headlines that affected millions of people, all of which were blamed on the infamous “computer glitches.”

I don’t know the specifics of these “glitches” but I suspect you really can’t blame the computers. A couple of decades of working with computers tells me that computers are pretty binary. They either work or they don’t, and which way it goes depends exactly on what you tell it to do. Now, no IT professional is going to tell a computer on purpose to wipe out the airline industry for a few hours or any other business, but it happens all the time. Why? They lacked the timely information to help them get sufficiently ahead of the problem.

Podcast with Microsoft’s Sam Ramji

icon for podpress  Doug and Javier with Sam Ramji [24:53m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (262)

Doug and Javier had a great conversation with Sam Ramji of Microsoft’s Open Source Software Lab. You can read about it at Port 25. Some choice tidbits:

We had a great discussion, which I opened bluntly by saying, “You don’t need to tell me about your software; I’ve seen it, my lab team thinks it’s cool, and we’re impressed.” He was happy to hear it but probably not surprised.

Hyperic and the "New Wave" of Management

Jack Hughes, of OPENXTRA Limited, a privately held network management VAR in the UK, has been writing a series this week on the “New Wave” of systems management. Jack touched on an important topic today when evaluating vendors:

“One of the odd things about the three new wave players is that, of the three, only one (Hyperic) supports Windows natively.”

Yes, we do – and Microsoft loves us for it! In fact, they are even a customer! Their Open Source labs are loving us as well… stay tuned for a podcast we did with them to be posted on port25 soon.

SysAdmin Magazine: RIP

CMP issued a press release today that announced “Based on shifting audience and market conditions, CMP is closing SysAdmin.” If you didn’t see it, that may have something to do with this nugget being buried in the 28th paragraph. This is a great loss for the community since SysAdmin was one of the few (if not the only?) magazines aimed squarely at the IT Ops/Admin teams which we serve. Part of me wonders whether this is just a natural side effect of more and more time spent online versus the magazine itself simply running out of steam. The timing is also ironic given the recent amount of activity in tools and technologies (like Hyperic HQ) aimed squarely at these readers.

Open Source Business 3 + 3

Stephen Walli was kind enough to request my opinion on 3 success factors and 3 things to avoid when building an open source business. It’s hard to beat Stephen’s 3, I agree with all of them - one of the most gratifying being the user is in control, acting as a catalyst to spread the word and empowered to use your product in organizations who may not have traditionally considered your solution. The “sneaking into the floorboards” gets projects far more play and proves them out by the ingenuity and acceptance of the end user, and enables the user to satisfy their needs with what works for them - not what someone else decides to pay for.

Announcing the Hyperic VMware Appliance

…and it’s ready for download.

We’ve always been great at giving our customers the ability to manage their VMware servers and guest VM’s, but now we’ve taken the extra step of creating a ready-to-run VMware appliance.

Basic platform: Debian 4.0
HQ version: 3.0.5-417 OS

Basic install:

  • Have VMware player installed (or server)
  • Start the appliance and login either as root or hyperic, with the password “hqadmin”. After logging in, you should see a message displaying your local Web URL for HQ, plus the username and password. (note: there’s a small chance that you might see an incorrect URL. If it contains “127.0.0.1″ you’ll have to replace that with the machine’s real address.)
