Nightmare on Web Street Winner

In the spirit (pun intended) of Halloween, Hyperic sponsored a Nightmare on Web Street contest, where folks were encouraged to tell their grim tales of IT woe for a chance at trick-or-treating for a Wii! The day has come, and the contest winner has been selected. Without further ado, I would like to congratulate “Mr Anderson” for his nightmarish tale of servers and HTML. Here’s the winning entry folks:

Oh by the way, your websites will no longer be hosted in 4 days

What Vendor is Primed for Open Source World Domination?

It’s a question we all wonder. Who will prove their technology team can crank out the best efforts in the industry? Who will be recognized for thier prowess in this fast-moving industry of open source software? To answer this question, we have devised an extremely competitive gauntlet to decide.

The showdown begins tomorrow at 5:30 Pacific.  At the end of the contest, we will know for certian who will take the title of open source world domination. Strategy, speed and general bravado will be the key ingredients needed to succeed. Trash-talking wins you extra points.

Enterprise Systems Management blogger John Willis recently attended a Tivoli user group (SOTUG) up in Canada, and met Brett Gillett, a veteran Tivoli user who has turned to Hyperic in the past couple years. Brett offered John a good perspective on why he made the switch and for what functionality. Acknowledging that Tivoli is a very large product, areas of the product no longer meet his business needs. Hence Hyperic!

Saving Money a By-Product of Saving Time with Data Center Automation (DCA)

When I first with Javier, Hyperic CEO, there were two things that struck me. One, Javier’s complete enthusiasm for the Hyperic HQ software and the team he was building, customers included. And two, he was right - Hyperic HQ actually provided real value to its users and customers through automating really tough processes and providing a better perspective on the data.  Basically, it saved people time, money and headaches when deploying web-based applications. So I signed up.

Today, my good friend Andi Mann of Enterprise Management Associates (EMA) confirms what I’ve known for some time, and why I bought into the Hyperic value proposition and the Open Source business model.  A press release from EMA describes a survey which found the following:

Hyperic First Enterprise Systems Management Vendor to Support Ubuntu’s Gutsy Gibbon Release

Ubuntu, the outstandingly popular desktop Linux distribution, announced its latest version on Thursday, October 18. Today, October 25th, Hyperic announced that Hyperic HQ now includes support for Gutsy Gibbon, giving administrators of the Linux-based operating system access to fully supported, enterprise-ready systems management for the new OS, and becoming the first IT management provider to support the new OS.

Businesses are experimenting with Ubuntu as their primary OS, and with Dell’s announcement that it will ship Ubuntu laptops, this trend will continue. Better manageability is a critical gating factor for Ubuntu to achieve more widespread business adoption. The Hyperic HQ plugin accomplishes just that. Now, HQ and Ubuntu administrators can instantly take full advantage of Hyperic’s management capabilities, including auto-discovery, monitoring, complex alerting and remediation.

Hyperic HQ and Gutsy Gibbon

It’s become quite a tradition these last couple of years - whenever we are about to “spring forward” or “fall behind” it can only mean one thing: it’s time for another Ubuntu release. Indeed, Ubuntu 7.10, aka “gutsy gibbon” was released last Friday, October 19. Good thing Hyperic HQ is pretty flexible about these things - here’s a screenshot of HQ running on gutsy:

HQ on Gutsy

And just in case the name is difficult to read…

Wii Smackdown… Mule asks for more ‘prep’ time

Well, we were expecting our good friends from MuleSource to show up tomorrow. As it turns out, they’ve asked for a postponement in order to accomodate the arrival of Dave’s tag-team partner Ross. Not sure how much Wii Tennis Ross is bringing to the fold, but we’ll be more than happy to give them more time to practice. In the meantime the teams from Jasper, Marketcetera, and others will also be given a bye week to polish their game.

Watch for an updated date and time on the evite.

See you next week sports fans.

Hows and Whys are the Who’s Who of Ops

I had a pretty fabulous week this week as I got to go to a meeting with some of the most sophisticated website operations teams in the world. I can’t name names, but I did ask one of them if I could write up his conversation at dinner last night. He said yes, so here goes.

Four Ops VPs were talking about their interviewing styles when looking to staff their Ops Development team or their NOC. One guy had a brilliant strategy. He separates them into two very black and white categories:

The Hows

Growing a Global Community

I just got back from 3 days off. In startup-land, that is virtually akin to 3 weeks. However, upon my return I was humbled by how much got done without me. In fact, really - how much even got done without a Hyperic employee.

It is no secret Hyperic’s community is growing. We now have deployments in over 80 countries.  We average 50-100 people online at any moment in our forums. Users answer each other’s questions. Contributions to our community - in the form of plugins, HOWTOs, and news posts that we have nothing to do with helping generate have become a regular event. This is how you know your project definitively has the foundation of something great.

What’s YOUR worst ops nightmare?

Some days feel like walking nightmares to the ops folks that power the websites we all take for granted. I’m sure the folks at 365 Main enjoyed their 24 hour outage crisis. Skype’s outage became a worldwide headline for 3 days. Not all website outages are headliners, but all of them are painful for the men and women in the trenches fighting those fires.
