Today, Hyperic is sharing an exciting new plugin as part of our ongoing preview of Hyperic HQ 4.0. The beauty of this plugin is it actually supports TWO products:
As a relative new-comer to the Hyperic Engineering team, I would like to use this opportunity to introduce myself to the community. I spent the previous two years as a platform engineer working on the Oracle Communication and Mobility Server. At Oracle, I helped integrate the J2EE and SIP application servers, exposing management and configuration features via Java Management Extensions (JMX).

The good things keep happening every day here at Hyperic. Today’s good news is that Barry Klawans has officially joined our team!

Many of you know Barry as the co-founder and longtime CTO of JasperSoft. Barry recently took leave of JasperSoft to find something that let him enjoy his family more. However, for those of you that know Barry well - his big brain is always cooking, and he can’t stay still for long. We’re excited that Barry is joining us at Hyperic on a part-time basis to do some more work on our JasperSoft integration. He’s actually cooking up a whole new ad-hoc reporting tool that is sure to cause millions of Hyperic-lovers out there to swoon.

This phrase was used close to a dozen times by Werner Vogels, CTO of Amazon.com at his recent keynote at the MySQL conference. Werner used it to describe the day to day tasks of most web operations teams… tasks like racking boxes, configuring routers, and installing software. He mentioned ops teams at Amazon got to spending 70% of their time in this mode, and this was one of the main catalysts for developing infrastructure that brings us S3, SQS, EC2, and more.

We’re adding a new event to our list this year - Web 2.0 Expo San Francisco. The event takes place this week, and is promising to be a great experience. There will be over 10,000 people here in San Francisco focused on evolving Web 2.0 technologies, and consequently - managing them, which is where Hyperic comes in. We manage Web 2.0 better than anyone out there today.
For those of you coming to Web 2.0, come by and visit us at booth #133. On Thursday, we’ll be hosting one of the 6 “booth crawl” pubs and will be handing out t-shirts for the first 500 or so folks that stop by.

Recently, I have gotten to know Roberto Galoppini. In our conversations, Roberto has asked some pressing questions on two of the more interesting areas of my job. The importance of Community and the importance of Microsoft to Hyperic in growing our business. I’ll talk about his recent post on Microsoft later, but right now, I’d like to elaborate on how big our community is to me at Hyperic.

The team just finished our second successful MySQL Con. Many thanks to Marten & Zack and all the folks at O’Reilly that put on such a great conference.
This year definitely had a different feel, and of course that had a lot to do with Sun’s influence. It felt like it was almost a new event, a chapter 2 for MySQL, and its ecosystem of vendors and customers. There were more people - I don’t know exact numbers, but it felt appeared to be twice as packed. The exhibit hall was the same, but we took up a bit more space than last year and certainly there were much fancier booths - ours included! We even gave away multiple prizes this year - our fun 8-ball tshirts, and a couple remote control helicopters. Scott Baird and Mike Hogan were the lucky winners this year.

Yesterday I had the opportunity to listen to Marten Mickos deliver the opening keynote at the MySQL conference here in Santa Clara. As usual, Marten does an enviable job at delivering a presentation which talks about MySQL’s business, its new relationship with Sun Microsystems, and what this all has to do with Open Source.
I’ve been lucky to hear Marten speak at a number of events, and have found that one of the most consistent themes can be distilled down to this (which we at Hyperic fully subscribe to):
Build a great product, Empower your Users, Build a great business

Dan Fost, a freelance reporter for the New York Times, did an article today on virtualization. In the beginning part of his research, he came to me to understand more about how virtualization is changing IT.
Dan’s article, titled Closing the Doors That Virtual Sprawl Leaves Open, covers a broad array of topics from the evolution of the main virtualization software providers to the issues that linger around deploying virtualization including security, compliance and systems management. Dan is part of a growing legion of reporters and business executives that recognize the change virtualization is having on customer facing business issues, citing:

In this HyperCAST, Marty Messer walks through the creation and deployment of SNMP-based plugins in Hyperic HQ. New users to Hyperic HQ often don’t know that an HQ agent can be used to connect to other SNMP-enabled devices on a network. This session shows you how to leverage that.
