Video: Javier Soltero at the Linux Foundation Summit

The Linux Foundation is holding their Collaboration Summit in Austin, TX this week. After browsing through some of the videos, I was pleasantly surprised to see Javier getting an interview.

Hyperic at Lug Radio Live!

We are positively stoked to be going to this weekend’s Lug Radio Live in San Francisco! Lug Radio Live (LRL) will be held on April 12 and 13 at the Metreon on 4th and Howard, which you’ll note is approximately 2 blocks from Hyperic headquarters. LRL features a who’s who of prominent Open Source luminaries, including Jeremy Allison of Samba fame, Miguel de Icaza, Ian Murdoch, ‘Mako’ Hill, and many others. I’ve been assured that I’m also on the program at 3pm on Sunday, April 13, although my name is not listed :)

#1 Reason not to invest in HVAC

[via the good folks at Engadget]
This has to be the most unique use of data center energy ever devised. It seems IBM has opted to use excess heat from a new facility in Uitikon, Switzerland to heat a nearby swimming pool.

Use this:

To warm this:
Someone's Swimming Pool

The article from the AP states:

In a few cases, the heat produced by the computers is used to warm nearby offices. In what appears to be a first, the town pool in Uitikon, Switzerland, outside Zurich, will be the beneficiary of the waste heat from a data center recently built by IBM Corp. for GIB-Services AG.

Fun & Fools

Yesterday was indeed April 1st aka April Fools Day. It also happened to be a Board of Directors meeting day here at Hyperic. Combine the two, and I pretty much combust over the need to have a little fun afterwards.

In a previous job, I almost always played the April Fools Day prank on my boss. I’ve changed his office into a storage closet, the week after we moved buildings. Watching him lead other executives round and round the floor searching for where he sat was great fun. I’ve collaborated with the management team to all seemingly randomly quit, ask for a job transfer, or request a leave of absence (the best was the guy who asked to go to a 6 week retreat in Costa Rica to be with a shaman who would help him forgive the sins of his past souls so he could have a happier life).

Rumors Of Sun Acquiring Hyperic & OpenNMS Unsubstantiated

Earlier today, Hyperic announced its acquisition of OpenNMS. Following the announcement, Tarus Balog, former OpenNMS CEO and Poobah Emeritus, made an unauthorized and premature announcement of a subsequent acquisition of the newly joined companies by Sun.

“While we really like Tarus, and are ecstatic to have him on our team, he’s really exciteable,” stated Stacey Schneider, spokeswoman for Hyperic. “He’s also very easy to ‘bait’ into deals with everyday food items such as lite beer and processed food products. The food comas they induce are crippling to his right brain processing - and he becomes very susceptible to persuasion. Now that he has become part of our fold, we’ll do everything in our power to protect him from these harmful situations.”
