Ask not what HQ can do for you…
May 2nd, 2008 Marty Messer
Since the introduction of the HQU Plugin Framwork, we’ve seen a lot of activity in the Hyperic community around using this new capability to take HQ places it’s never been before. I might be biased, but quite honestly the idea alone of HQU makes me a bit giddy. Anytime I see this kind of power being put in the hands of users and administrators I know something good is happening. No longer are users tied to official release schedules to bring new functionality to HQ. No longer is the intended use of HQ the only use of HQ. No longer are the tools of production held solely by the select few. Power to the people!
So before I inadvertently start a revolution, let’s get back to reality and look at how real people are using HQU to solve real problems. Jeff Schwartz of CityTech had an itch that the current release of HQ couldn’t scratch, namely the ability to disable platform alerts on a schedule for use during maintenance downtime. Jeff chose the HQU Plugin Framework as his weapon of choice, and developed the Platform Alert Manager plugin to meet his needs. We’ve seen Jeff’s excellent contributions before and this one is no exception. It offers a really nice, simple way to disable and re-enable alerts on a platform using a schedule and no one from Hyperic Engineering was harmed required in the creation of this feature.
Jeff has kindly contributed his work back to the Hyperic community, and the HQU Forge gains another excellent example of the capabilites everyone now has access to in HQ. You, too, can build HQU Plugins. Give it a try and show us your stuff!
