Hyperic HQ and OpenNMS Integration:
Download (341)
Let the good times begin! The official HyperCAST on HOWTO integrate Hyperic and OpenNMS is now ready for your viewing pleasure!
David Hustace, OpenNMS President and Charles Lee, co-founder and VP of Engineering at Hyperic, teamed up together to discuss and show how Hyperic & OpenNMS work together. The HyperCAST was popular indeed, with for the first time ever in the history of HyperCASTs (ok, this is only #10) we had 2 analysts attend and several customers call in before the session to secure their place in line for implementing the anticipated integration. All the attention definitely got us excited, and I think it shows through in the session itself.

I love my job. For those that don’t know me too well, I have the privilege of looking after all outbound activity here at Hyperic. In that capacity I get to interact with the community, customers, press and analysts. Sometimes all at once.
Thing is, I don’t get to see them that often - its mostly done over the telephone or email. This week though, I’ve been lucky.

I just got back from 3 days off. In startup-land, that is virtually akin to 3 weeks. However, upon my return I was humbled by how much got done without me. In fact, really - how much even got done without a Hyperic employee.
It is no secret Hyperic’s community is growing. We now have deployments in over 80 countries. We average 50-100 people online at any moment in our forums. Users answer each other’s questions. Contributions to our community - in the form of plugins, HOWTOs, and news posts that we have nothing to do with helping generate have become a regular event. This is how you know your project definitively has the foundation of something great.

I love it when a community comes together! This morning I came across this blog post all about how easy it is to set up Tomcat monitoring on Ubuntu with HQ. As a bonus, the same process appears to apply to Nexenta, an OpenSolaris-based distribution, as well.
You know your software is useful when people post bits like this on the net. Thanks to tools like Technorati, it’s easy to find them and post them here :)
Read the post on managing Tomcat 5 on Ubuntu and Nexenta.

At the heart of every good open source project is a vibrant community. But what is the measure that your community is successful? Is it the first time someone contributed a patch? Wrote up some documentation? Wrote a plugin? Really, there’s no easy way to tell when a community catches fire, but when all of the above happen in tandem, it’s a good sign that you’re at least on the right track. And it gives us the opportunity to call out some of the more stellar contributions.

We’ve introduced something new here at Hyperic. Every member of our community forums now has a tiny icon next to their user name. For Hyperic employees, it’s the “H” logo. For everyone else, you’ll see one of 6 icons, depending on how many points you’ve accumulated. This is part of our new rewards program, where you get credit for answering forum questions. And if you do something really special, like contribute a plugin, patch, or HOWTO document, we’ll assign you special bonus points… and you get a little gold star!! Ok, not really, unless you just really want one

It’s a busy time at Hyperic. Here’s a rundown of what we released today:
- Hyperic HQ 3.0.2 - Here’s the latest rev of our Open Source systems management software. This release has more efficient database utilization, improving performance. Download from SourceForge.net. Support is now available for HQ! See details.
- Hyperic HQ 3.0 Enterprise Extensions - This release takes the solid-as-a-rock Open Source HQ and adds a few things, such as policy-based alerting, dashboard access control, and aggregate alerting. See the press release for details. Download a trial - the trial is only limited by the number of devices you can monitor (3), not feature set.
