Joe Hernick from InfoWorld released a new report today with some surprising data. The New Sprawl: Managing Virtual Server Environments, published today, Joe announced that only 2% of the 323 InfoWorld Respondents were using a virtualization management strategy that reconciled the physical to the virtual servers (P2V). A whopping 27% were using a “wink and a prayer”. All the others were using various tools that provide a partial view at best of their environment behavior.

Dan Fost, a freelance reporter for the New York Times, did an article today on virtualization. In the beginning part of his research, he came to me to understand more about how virtualization is changing IT.
Dan’s article, titled Closing the Doors That Virtual Sprawl Leaves Open, covers a broad array of topics from the evolution of the main virtualization software providers to the issues that linger around deploying virtualization including security, compliance and systems management. Dan is part of a growing legion of reporters and business executives that recognize the change virtualization is having on customer facing business issues, citing:

Sys-Con just announced that Hyperic HQ has been nominated for this summer’s Reader’s Choice Awards. The category we were nominated for is Best Virtualization Platforms Monitoring & Reporting. The nomination process is open until Sunday June 22nd, and the voting period will be until November 15. The final results will be at the upcoming 4th International Virtualization Conference & Expo.
It’s of course always nice to be recognized as a contentious player in any market segment, but in this case I find the exact category really interesting. You see, there are several Virtualization Management Categories:

I love my job. For those that don’t know me too well, I have the privilege of looking after all outbound activity here at Hyperic. In that capacity I get to interact with the community, customers, press and analysts. Sometimes all at once.
Thing is, I don’t get to see them that often - its mostly done over the telephone or email. This week though, I’ve been lucky.

News hit today that Covalent Technologies (or what I commonly refer to as Covalent 2.0) was acquired by SpringSource. This is an incredibly interesting piece of news since as most of you might have heard, Hyperic’s founding team met while working at the original Covalent (1.0). We also developed the first version of the HQ technology (then called Covalent Application Manager) back in 2002.

Today I learned that Hyperic won Enterprise Management Associate’s Award for Open Source Systems Management. What’s more, we discovered that we won the top slot, what EMA calls the ‘First Team All-Star’ position. The idea here is that all teams have a starting lineup, or ‘First Team’ and then a series of reserves, which is the second tier of this award review, simply known as ‘All-Stars’, and a rookie group of rising potentials for the category known as ‘Rising Stars’.

The first release of Hyperic HQ 3.2 Beta is now available for download. This exciting new release is designed to provide a more powerful “single pane of glass” to monitor, diagnose and manage today’s complex, custom, web-based IT environments. In addition, significant infrastructure enhancements to the core Hyperic HQ platform were added to deliver the most scalable and manageable enterprise monitoring software available in open source.
New Diagnostics and Visibility
Today’s IT administrators deal with an increasing burden of disparate technologies, and changing resources to monitor and maintain. Typically, they rely on a variety of utilities and diagnostic tools to ensure and restore availability to their systems. Hyperic HQ 3.2 introduces three new capabilities that provide both new and existing users of HQ a single console to manage all layers of their infrastructure:
