Apple announced its latest version of its popular Mac OS X distribution, code named Leopard, on Friday, October 26. Today, November 12, Hyperic announced that Hyperic HQ now includes support for Leopard, giving Mac developers and administrators alike access to fully supported, enterprise-ready systems management for the new OS.
Businesses, particularly in the technology sector, are increasingly gravitating toward development and operations on Mac OS X run machines. In fact, development at Hyperic itself is done largely on MacBook Pros. Better usability factors for multi-tasking and a robust architecture that appeals to developers drew Hyperic towards the Mac OS X early on in the company’s development.

Ubuntu, the outstandingly popular desktop Linux distribution, announced its latest version on Thursday, October 18. Today, October 25th, Hyperic announced that Hyperic HQ now includes support for Gutsy Gibbon, giving administrators of the Linux-based operating system access to fully supported, enterprise-ready systems management for the new OS, and becoming the first IT management provider to support the new OS.
Businesses are experimenting with Ubuntu as their primary OS, and with Dell’s announcement that it will ship Ubuntu laptops, this trend will continue. Better manageability is a critical gating factor for Ubuntu to achieve more widespread business adoption. The Hyperic HQ plugin accomplishes just that. Now, HQ and Ubuntu administrators can instantly take full advantage of Hyperic’s management capabilities, including auto-discovery, monitoring, complex alerting and remediation.

Skype’s outage this morning (and the ensuing uproar from it’s dedicated users) served as yet another example of how a critical online service is under constant risk of upsetting its users and losing business due. While the true cause of the outage has not been officially communicated by the folks at Skype, it’s precisely these types of events which keep the wheels turning over here at Hyperic. First, it was the airlines with their mysterious computer glitches freezing the skies. Then, it was the power outage/rumored drunken ops guy at 365 Main. Then Cisco’s site was down. Then this week, the LAX halted the airline industry again with a single faulty NIC card. It seems like there’s a trend here…

I am very pleased to announce, that among all the systems management vendors who are going to be at Linux World, the event producers, IDG World Expo, and the judging staff from LinuxWorld.com, have selected Hyperic HQ 3.1, as a finalist for the Best Systems Management Tool Award. This is especially exciting as it is further proof that our newest release, Hyperic HQ 3.1, is going to meet the demands of some of the keenest eyes out there in software.
As for who else was selected, we are in a class with some very respectable competition:

The 451 Group just released a report, Managing in the Open: The Next Wave of Systems Management, which focuses on how the big 4 management vendors are ripe for a shake-up. This is not all that surprising to me, as Hyperic has based its business plan on the opportunity in this market and it is the reason for our continued success.
One quote got me thinking though:
“Open source is breathing new competitive life into systems management, ultimately forcing the established vendors to respond in their products, pricing and strategies. Open source could give potential challengers the cost and ease-of-implementation advantages they need to take on such formidable opponents.” said Raven Zachary, the Open Source Research Director at The 451 Group.

Redmonk’s Michael Cote got around to posting this interview of Javier from JavaOne. The wait was worth it - the audio is far better than the one I posted of the same interview.
Coté and James talked with Javier about SIGAR, Hyperic’s open source library for getting low-level system information, the perennial question of single- vs. multi-source open source development and what it means to be an open source company, comparisons to Wily as far as trouble-shooting, and finally the Java middle-ware landscape that Hyperic finds in its customer base.

Matt Asay has posted a great profile of our very own Ryan Morgan, Hyperic co-founder, Chief Software Architect, and the most talented Hyperican with a golf club. He was also a driving force behind Apache’s mod_ftp. Go Ryan - you can’t stop him, you can only hope to contain him.

NetworkWorld’s Barry Nance just posted his bakeoff of open source management tools. This test focused on the open source products available from 3 vendors, Hyperic, Zenoss and Groundwork. The test was based on functionality alone, and did not consider other specialized topics such as scalability, setup or any special management of specific technologies. In Barry’s words:
We tested each product’s ability to discover, manage, administer, monitor, report on, diagnose, troubleshoot, reset, reconfigure and secure our network devices, applications, servers and clients.
