    The Evolution of Community.

by Jeremy Hogan on July 9, 2008 at 10:13 am | In Community, Events, IT Industry | No Comments

If you’ll be joining us at OSCON this year, be sure and check out the Evolution of Community panel featuring yours truly.

Over the past ten years, nothing has impacted business more than community. Whether through the openness of software development spurred by Linux or the dismantling of media empires through blogging, the rise of communities has been the driving force in how we work and live today. But what’s next? For open source developers, what has to happen to maintain and grow the communities they’ve built? What happens to communities when successful projects are acquired by big corporate behemoths? What happens to communities when their projects fail?

Who needs monitoring when you have Valleywag & TechCrunch?

by javier on July 8, 2008 at 10:10 am | In CloudStatus, Javiers Blog | No Comments

    Vintage 500 page

It looks like Google Apps suffered a brief outage this morning. How did we find out? Well, from Valleywag of course. After all, the best place to get the status of key cloud based applications and infrastructure is also the same place where you can find out the latest gossip about the valley. Seems natural, right? No thanks.

More proof that for all the benefits the cloud offers, it’s still just one lousy powerstrip/drunk ops guy/evil hax0r away from being just a 500 error page with an old logo on it. Good thing we’re working on adding Google’s cloud services to CloudStatus.com! Stay tuned…

    OpenMoko Releases Open Smart Phone.

by Jeremy Hogan on July 3, 2008 at 6:29 pm | In HQ | No Comments

Celebrate Independence Day with a fully (legally) unbricked smart phone. Starting July 4th, OpenMoko will begin selling it’s Neo FreeRunner for $399. The software is 100% free and open source. For an additional $99 you can get the Debug Board and really get up in its guts. VGA touchscreen, 500MHz, 128M RAM, WiFi, Bluetooth, AGPS, GPRS (2.5G), 3-axis motion sensors, 256M Flash memory, microSD slot. Oh yeah, and it’s a phone. If that’s not enough to give you a four alarm nerdgasm, it comes in a box that looks like a Moleskine. Niiice.
